Kambavaim / Gang spirit
Need linnud armastavad kambas lendamist.
See tundub üsna energiakulukas olevat.
These birds love flying in flocks. If one in colony finds a good reason to fly then many of them seems to fully agree - "Why not!"
Little auks (Alle alle), also known with a name Dovekie, are rather noisy at the breeding colony but are silent at sea.
In flight, Little Auks appear unstable and swift with fast whirring wing beats due to the short wings. This must take a lot of energy.
The Glaucous gull and the Arctic Fox are the main predators on Little Auks. But in some cases, believe or not, the Polar Bear has also been reported to feed on their eggs - the bird itself is just about 19-21 cm in length! One can imagine how much bear can get from some eggs.

Ühel päeval / One day
Kohtasin üht vahvat tüüpi ja ütlesin talle: "Tere!"
"Tere ise kah!", vastas ta.
"Vaata!...vot nii suureks kord kasvan ma!"
Suvi läheneb lõpule. Sel randtiiru (Sterna paradisaea) pojal on hea šanss alustada peagi pikka rännakut lõuna poole ja elada veel kaua. Tiibade proov näitab, et varsti võib lennata küll.
Randtiirud on koloonia linnud ja kogu koloonia kaitseb pesi halastamatu visadusega. Siiski on see väga karm aeg, mis pojad peavad suureks kasvades üle elama. Pesitsemine maapinnal avamaastikul teeb tiirude munad ja pojad väga haavatavateks. Kaks peamist vaenlast, polaarrebane ja jääkajakas, külastavad kolooniat püsivalt.
I saw a cool guy and said: "Hello!"
"Hey you too!", it replied.
"Look!...How big I will be one day!"
Summer comes to an end. This Arctic Tern (Sterna paradisaea) chick has a good chance to start a long journey to the South and live long. Test of the wings shows that soon it will fly.
Arctic Terns are colony birds and the whole colony protects nests mercilessly. Yet, it's a very dangerous time what tern chicks have to come through while growing up. Nesting on an open ground makes eggs and chicks very vulnerable. Two major enemies - Arctic Fox and Glaucous gull - persistently visiting colony.

Külma puudutus / Cold touch
Kuu on väljas,
pliidil on tuli all ja Orion on tõusnud. Särava tähistaeva all valmistun vastu
võtma ööd lumes.
Ma ei tea küll
vist midagi romantilisemat kui magada magamiskotiga pehmes lumehanges, kus
magamistoa laeks, mida enne uinumist põrnitseda, on tähti täis öine taevas.
Kui on täiskuu ja
piisavalt külm, siis lumi sätendab imeliselt öises valguses. Vaikne ilm
võimaldab kuulda külma helisid. Olgu siis selleks metsas paukuvad puud,
eriliselt krudisev lumi või mõnikord isegi jääkristallide eneste langemise
sahin – jah ka seda on võimalik kuulda.
Küllap see ongi
põhjuseks miks ma selge ja vaikse ilmaga eelistan lagedat telgita taevaalust.
Sestap on just külmad ööd eriliselt ahvatlevad lumes magamiseks.
Nii tegin ma ka
sel korral (2010. aasta talvel), kui ilmaennustus lubas tolle talve madalamaid
temperatuure.
Celsiust.
Pärast tassi
kuuma teed olin ma testiks valmis. Umbes kesköö paiku kaevasin lumme omale
lesimispaiga, riietusin lahti ja pugesin magamiskotti. Jätsin selga vaid
pika villase aluspesu. Termomeeter näitas –30 kraadi Celsiust. On üsna
Algus on alati
piisavalt sooja toota. Värisemine on osa mehaanilisest tööst, mida keha teeb
Iga kraad
väljaspool magamiskotti saab nüüd määravaks vastusena tööle, mida keha
üritab teha selleks, et hoida temperatuuri. Kui väljas on liiga külm, siis ei
suuda keha magamiskoti sees mugavat temperatuuri hoida ja tulemuseks on
külmetamistunne, mis ei lase muidugi uinuda. Kui välistemperatuur on aga just
selline, mille puhul keha saab hakkama sisetemperatuuri hoidmisega, siis jääb
mõnus tunne alles ja peagi võiks magama jääda. Loomulikult on selles mängus
Selleks on magamiskoti
sein, mida peavad üheltpoolt väljast tulev külm õhk ja teisalt kotist lahkuv
soe õhk läbima.
Paari
See sunnib
mind magamiskoti lukku avama ja seljakotist rohkem riideid hankima. Ma ei pane
neid aga selga vaid kasutan lisakihina magamiskoti soojustamisel. Sel viisil
Keha on ainus
magamiskoti isolatsioon on kokku surutud. Lisaks ka midagi jalgade ümber.
Enne päikesetõusu
saan lõpuks und. Kiire pilguheit termomeetrile tunnistab –35 kraadi Celsiust ja
sellega on pügal jõudnud ka skaala lõppu. Kahjuks ei võimalda minu
suusahoolduskohvrist pärit lume termomeeter madalamaid temperatuure mõõta. Ega
lugeda!
The moon is
out, the stove is on and Orion has risen. Under the starry heaven I prepare to
spend a night in the snow.
I do not
know anything more romantic than laying in a sleeping bag packed into a soft
snow pack and having a starry heaven as a roof of your sleeping room.
When there
is full moon out, and cold enough, then snow is shining miraculously in this
light. Calm weather makes it possible to listen the cold – it’s the cracking
sound of trees in the woods, crunchy snow or sometimes even sound of the
falling ice crystals what one could hear if paying enough attention.
That’s why
I rather prefer sleep under the open sky than in the tent when there is clear
and calm weather out. A good reason to find cold nights particularly appealing
for a sleep in the snow.
So I did at
this time in 2010 when weather forecast was promising record low winter
temperatures in Estonia. I choused the bog as a site, where in cloudless and no
wind conditions air cools down more than in the woods.
But this
time I also had a second purpose to go. I was keen to test my sleeping bag so
called extreme temperature and find out how I will stand with it. Extreme
temperature what sleeping bag manufactures are using is well known phrase as
“you won’t die and you won’t sleep, you just survive”. For my sleeping bag at
this time it was given –40 degrees Celsius.
After cup
of hot tea I was ready for a test. It was about midnight when I dug a nest into
snow, dropped off my clothing and jumped into sleeping bag. I left on only long
woolen underwear. Thermometer was showing –30 degrees Celsius. Obviously in
these conditions you want to do that exercise fast.
The
beginning is always cold. It takes some time before the air inside the sleeping
bag gets warmed up. Intensive energy burning starts and engine works at full
blast to produce the heat. Shaking is part of the mechanical work done by the
body in order to survive. Quite soon it feels nice and warm. Now you just keep
out your eyes and nose to enjoy the starry sky.
But from my
previous experiences I know that the real fight against the cold will come
soon. There comes a moment when body wants to go on a normal cycle and find a
certain balance. It can or cannot happen according to the outer temperature.
Now every degree outside becomes important responding to the work what body is
doing to keep the warmth inside of the sleeping bag. If it is too cold outside
then body is unable to keep comfort temperature and results with a freezing feeling
what obviously won’t let you sleep. If the outer temperature is just about what
body can take to keep the inner temperature then you feel comfort and could
fall asleep. There is a third important factor what is of course wall of the
sleeping bag what intrusive cold air and leaving warm air needs to penetrate.
This insulation is a controlling factor.
After a
couple of hour I feel I unpleasantly cold and cannot sleep. It forces me to
unzip and find more clothing from a backpack. I won’t put them on but using
instead as an additional insulation layer for my sleeping bag. That way it
works more effectively as you keep your legs and arms (periphery part of your
body) as close as possible with your main body. Body as only radiation source
is better to keep compact in the air space what it needs to heat. It helps to
reduce the heat loss and save energy.
Usually it
already helps to put something underneath where insulation layer is compacted
between your body and the surface. Something around the legs is very helpful
too.
Before
sunrise I get my sleep. A quick look to the thermometer shows –35 degrees.
Unfortunately that was the end of the scale for my snow thermometer origins from a ski
service case. But no matter how cold it finally was I had
found the comfort temperature of my sleeping bag. Test was successful!

Jäine jõgi / The icy river
Siin on esitatud vaid üks osa tervest tsüklist.
Not all the glaciers are calving into the ocean. Some of them are droping the ice into the river where it melts and finds a way to the ocean. It is a big mess in front of the glacier. Irregularity of calving and melting changes the size of the river continuously. There is nothing stable.
Here is presented just a fraction of the entire cycle. It takes thousands of years to accumulate the precipitation from a sky into an enormous mass of ice - drop by drop, snowflake by snowflake - it freezes and compresses to become the glacier ice. From the cap ice takes then a long journey towards the coast where it finally melts to become again water in the ocean. Then there is just a one more cycle to go - evaporation from the ocean - and we are back where it all once begun - in the sky.
There is no end, just the new beginning!

Ta tuleb... / She comes...
Ta on võtnud nõuks riskida...
See emakaru, kel järel kaks esimese aasta poega, käitus vastupidiselt meie ootustele.
Stressis karu on kõige ohtlikum karu.
Põhja-Jäämere aina kahanev jääkate muudab nende tuleviku paraku väga tumedaks. Seepärast ilmselt kohtab ka karude puhul aina sagedamini neile harjumatut käitumist, mille põhjustajaks on võimetus edukalt hülgeid küttida ja sellest tulenev stress.
She has made a decision to take a risk...
This mother bear, who has two first year cubs following her, behaved opposite to our expectations. Most cases mother bear tries to avoid risks and protect her cubs. When we saw them from a distant, we were almost sure that they would run away. But the situation became quite the contrary. We had to shoot several shots and make whatever loud noise to force her back off. Yet, she turned back again... and again. We almost thought that she never gonna give up. But finally it happened...
This kind of behaviour by the female polar bear was first time for us to witness. Cannot make any other conclusion than that she must have had hunger so deep that there was not many choices for her to keep cubs alive. Stressed polar bear is the most dangerous polar bear.
Retreating sea ice of the Arctic Ocean does not leave them many choices. In fact, their future looks unfortunately rather dark. Inability to hunt seals and resulting stress probably also changes their behaviour and makes them even more unpredictable.

Hoitud lubadus / A promise kept
Minu vanem poeg Nansen tegi mulle teele kaasa selle
vahva joonistuse.
puudust rohelisest murust jala talla all, tuules mühisevate puude helist,
issi?" Neelatades klompi kurgus, vastasin: "Muidugi tulen, luban teile pojad - ma tulen
tagasi!" See oli lahkumise rängeim hetk...
Raskeimatel ja väga kriitilistel hetkedel ekspeditsiooni jooksul meenus mulle alati see antud lubadus. Pole vist tarvis kirjeldada, millist imelist jõudu ja usku see noil hetkil andis. Kui nüüd lõpuks üle koduläve astusin, siis tundsin uskumatut kergendust. Teadsin, et just äsja olin pidanud kinni kalleimast lubadusest oma elus - jõudsin tagasi koju.
My older son Nansen made this great artwork for me to my journey. He knew that in the middle of the frozen ice fields I will perhaps miss the most green grass underneath of my feet, sound of the trees in the blowing wind, summer smell of juicy apples and may be even warmth of the sun. Other side of the drawing he wrote with his own hands "See you Timo... Nansen wrote" Then he looked into my eyes and asked: "You are coming back daddy, aren't you?" Swallowing lump in throat I replied: "For sure I come, I promise to you my sons - I will come back!" That moment was the hardest on my leave...
On the hardest and critical moments during the expedition this given promise always came to my mind. No need to describe what a strength and belief that gave to me on those moments. When now I finally stepped across my doorsill, I felt incredible relief. I knew that I just had kept the most precious promise in my life - returned back home.

On aeg tagasi tulla.

A little more to wait and I will be rescued. A "spiderman" abseils down from the helicopter and lifts me out of the sea to have a safe flight back home. Second time I had a change to take part of the rescue drill in Spitsbergen.
Luckily me and Audun we didn't have the real case on our North Pole journey. But it's always good to train and be ready.

Treeninghooaeg / The workout season
As athletes so do dogs need to workout throughout the year in order to be in shape for their main season in winter.

Kaadrist väljas / Out of the frame
I will be out of the frame for a while. Need to take some time to go through the material from the expedition. But I will be back soon and then you will hear and see more about this wonderful journey.

Valged tipud kutsuvad... / White peaks are calling...
...kaugetelt randadelt,
miski tõusmas horisondilt mere taguselt.
Kuula seda tuult sosistamas kõrvus,
tunne seda tormi kasvavat hinges.
...from across the distant shore,
on the horizon beyond the sea something rises more.
Listen that breeze, whispering in your ears,
feel that gale, rising in your heart.

Mis teoksil? / What's up?
Meie ei tea midagi!
Ärge uskuge neid süütuid ja armsaid nägusid:) Sekundeid hiljem hakkas üks kiirgusmõõtja sensoreid uurima ja teine kaableid närima nagu oleks tegu parima närimiskummiga, mida Arktikas leida võib. Milline külalislahkus :)
We do know nothing!
Do not believe these innocent and cute looking faces:) Seconds later one started to investigate closely radiometer sensors and another was chewing cables like it would be the best bubble gum available in the Arctic. What a wonderful hospitality:)

Maailma lõpus / At the end of the World
On hetki, mil seisad jahmunult suu ammuli kogu looduse vägevuse ees, olles justkui suure etenduse tunnistajaks - kuniks taipad, et võiks ka päästikule vajutada :)
Poegiv liustik. Hinnanguliselt on tegemist umbes 40 meetri kõrguse liustikuseinaga.
Mul oli õnne mitte ainult seal viibida, vaid korra - üle noatera - pääseda ka terve nahaga...
Madala resolutsiooniline skänn slaidist.
There are moments when you just stand still openmouthed and admire all this mighty of nature, just like being given a show in a big open theatre - until you realise, you could press the shutter release button too :)
Calving glacier. An estimation would be about 40 meters high (ca 130 feet) glacier front.
I was lucky not only being there but also had once a narrow escape with a whole skin...

Natuke päikest, natuke tervist, natuke emotsioone, natuke nalja ja natuke pingetki - natuke kõike, mida vajad oma elus, et tunda end elavana. Kõik täiskasvanud, homme on teie kord - 63 kilomeetrit puhast naudingut! Kohtumiseni rajal!

Unustamatu treeningpaik / Unforgettable place to workout
Aastate jooksul on paljudel suusaradadel liueldud. Kuid kõige eksootilisem koht, kus murdmaasuusa treeningut tehtud, on kahtlemata Kuninganna Maudi maa Antarktikas.
Passed years I have been tried out several cross-country ski trails. But without a doubt the most exotic of them has been one on Queen Maud Land in Antarctica. Particularly nice was a fact that first you needed to prepare one with a snowmobile. And for sure, one cannot forget a great Finnish research station sauna after every workout!

Külmunud armastus / Frozen love
Ühtaegu ilus ja valus. Nii ma nad sealt vileda tuule käest leidsin - keset Gröönimaa liustikku, külg külje vastas, jagamas viimast soojust - kuniks seegi hääbus.
Beautiful and hurtful at the same time. That's how I found them in a chilly wind - in the middle of the Greenland ice cap, side by side, sharing the last warmth - until it finally vanished.
