Sulgimise aeg / Moulting time
Teravmägede lumepüü (Lagopus muta hyperborea) vahetab oma suvise
sulekasuka talvise vastu.
Svalbard rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta hyperborea) is changing into winter plumage. It's the only land-inhabiting bird which resides in the archipelago throughout the year. Svalbard rock ptarmigan is a sub-species of the rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta). It is larger and heavier than either the rock ptarmigan or the willow ptarmigan on mainland.

Otsustav hetk / The decisive moment
Ühe jääskulptuuri jaoks on kätte jõudnud elu otsustav hetk. Shakespeare'i parafraseerides võiks nüüd küsida - minna või mitte minna.
For one ice sculpture the decisive moment of its life has been reached. Paraphrasing Shakespeare one could ask now - go or not to go. Unfortunately, ultimately there is still no choice at this case as the viewpoint where it stands is also formed by ice. And that ice sooner or later must melt anyway.
But in a similar manner our life can be full of these decisive moments and who could tell us then what choice we should make. Do we trust our internal feeling, have we a courage to face the challenege, or perhaps would better stay on the safe side. Hard to say as every case can be different.
All what I can say, is that when I left that place after some days, this ice piece had still not made up its mind.

Huntide maa / The Wolfland
Pildil kujutatu on koht kus nad elavad, kus see ulguminegi lindistatud on.
The image shows the place where they live, where the howling has been recorded.
Paraku on teda seal kujutatud mitte just hea tegelaskujuna. Alateadlik hirm, mida me huntide vastu tunneme, pärineb ilmselt juba meie esivanematelt, kelle rajad huntide omadega millalgi liigagi sageli kohtuma hakkasid.
Mythology and folklore is full of stories about wolves. Wolf is probably a wild beast, that has been most deeply embedded in many of our famous myths and legends. But mostly presented as a not good character. Subconscious fear what we feel against wolves probably origins already from our ancestors on early days when paths of these two started to cross too many times. That has brought to wolves rather bad reputation what has resulted with our violent and resistant attitude against them. An instinctive fear of the wolf became a fearsome symbol of our woods and wild nature. Creature that once symbolised strength and courage became dark and savage. Yet, they are a natural part of the landscape and the ecosystem - a very needed part.
If there could be a sound in wild landscape what could symbolize strength, independency and untamableness, then for me it would be the howling of the wolves - a truly call of the wild.
"The Wild still lingered in him and the wolf in him merely slept."

Milline kogemus! / What an experience!
As much as I could remember, I had never been driving a caterpillar. Now, at latitude 89 North, in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, I had finally chance to do it. A great comrade (Russian MI8 engineer and runway expert, who's name I have unfortunately forgotten) offered me and Audun an opportunity to drive runway caterpillar. That was a great play before 1600 km long march started.

Helkivad ööpilved. Polaarmesosfääri pilved, mis suvisel ajal nähtavad kesköö paiku põhjataevas. Meteoroloogiline fenomen esineb umbes 50°-70° põhja- ja lõunalaiusel ligikaudu 75-85 km kõrgusel. Tegemist on kõrgeimate pilvedega maakera atmosfääris, mis nähtavad ainult tänu allpool horisonti olevale päikesele.

Hülga mugavustsoon! / Leave the comfort zone!
Milline on see elu seal, kus lõpeb mugavustasand?
What a life lies there where comfort ends? Do you believe that it could flow through the smallest blood vessels, could turn tiniest cells of your body into an enormous energy burst?
If you do believe - then it shakes you, goes beyond your imagination. It freezes and burns at a same time. Many things you have never seen before can float to the surface now. It gathers the greatest emotions and makes you feel so alive.

When chief engineer Guillaume went out to test a Russian tractor, an unique machine we had on a Tara drift, I offered him my help. Because I had had some experiences with Russian tractors before.
First I tried to explain him that there is one truly necessary tool what could fix most of the problems. And this tool is a hammer.
Next thing he opened tractor's toolbox and guess what! Only tool he could find there was a hammer!
"What did I tell you!"
Chief engineer was happiness himself.

Millest oled sa tehtud! / What are you made of!
Inimene on üks tujukas olend.
Jack London "Valge vaikus"
I do not know better place, what could put mans spirit and patience to such a test, as it can be done by Arctic Ocean. It is a unique experience to walk on an uncertain surface, what itself is in a constant move and change. That makes you feel hollow inside. You are facing some of your deepest fears.
Man is a moody creature, whose state of mind can be variable. I find it to be rather human. How many times we felt that we not gonna make it...and yet, how many times we felt that we can handle it. Today was not as yesterday and tommorrow was not as today. I have never before felt power of nature in so quintessential way. How miserable we sometimes were :)
"Sole speck of life journeying across the ghostly wastes of a dead world, he trembles at his audacity, realizes that his is a maggot's life, nothing more. Strange thoughts arise unsummoned, and the mystery of all things strives for utterance. And the fear of death, of God, of the universe, comes over him - the hope of the Resurrection and the Life, the yearning for immortality, the vain striving of the imprisoned essence - it is then, if ever, man walks alone with God."

Seetõttu on raske edasiliikumise teed prognoosida.
The one who's paddling has much lower angle of view than the one on skies. Finding an optimal route ahead is therefore even harder. But you need to search it if you are in the middle of the chaos of open leads and ice floes. Not all the possible roads lead you to South. Audun stands up to scout for the possible passage.

Kui päev saab läbi... / When the day is over...
...on käes vaikuse ja rahu aeg. See on mõtiskluste aeg.
Päikese kadumine isegi krõbedas pakases jätab ometi sooja tunde. Küllap on selle olemuses sedavõrd palju homse lootuse sütitavat toimet.
Uus koit toob uut energiat ja õhtune lootus sisendab usku järgnevaks päevaks.
...it's time for silence and peace of mind. It's a meditative time.
Even in bitterly cold setting sun could leave a warm feeling. Perhaps because it has so much warmth from the hope of a new day.
New dawn brings new energy and last eve hope gives a faith for the coming day.
